Nurture Group (Cwts Cwm Glas)

We are very proud of our new Nurture Provision (Cwts Cwm Glas), which we have just developed.

A nurture group is a small, discrete class which provides a safe, caring and

structured environment where identified children can develop their language and communications skills whilst addressing any barriers to learning that they may be experiencing, linked to social, emotional and / or challenging behaviour.

What is a Nurture Group?

A nurture group is a small, discrete class which provides a safe, caring and structured environment where identified children can develop their language and communications skills whilst addressing any barriers to learning that they may be experiencing, linked to social, emotional and / or challenging behaviour. Nurture groups run parallel to mainstream classes with 2 dedicated members of staff who model positive relationships and work to build the self-esteem and confidence of the children.

How are children identified?

Teachers and learning assistants constantly observe and assess the needs of the children. If a child could potentially benefit from being part of the Nurture group, the class teacher makes a referral, assessments are undertaken and then the Nurture Leaders decide if the child’s needs could be addressed through a Nurture setting. At this stage, parental support and consent is sought and following that, the child is invited to join the Nurture group. Targets are set based on the outcomes of the assessment, called a Boxall Profile.
